Embrace The Challenge By Elise Cohen (Age 10)

Hi My name is Elise. I like things most kids like. Riding my bike, dancing, and video games. I also love Halloween. What makes me different is that I am allergic to peanuts. When I was first starting to drink real milk I was getting a rash around my mouth. I had a test for almost every food invented and that’s when my family realized I was allergic to milk, peanuts, and one kind of tree nut.

I outgrew all of my allergies except the annoying peanut guy decided to stick around. Being allergic to peanuts means I can’t eat things with peanuts or things processed with peanuts. When I was little it was no big deal and most kids my age didn’t really know what being allergic to peanuts was so they didn’t really care. When I was 4 I told people about it and they ran away from me thinking they could catch it. I explained to them that it is not contagious and people started asking questions about it. I don’t mind answering questions because it is what makes me, me. Kids  with allergies have a lot of fun on Halloween because they get to have the Switch Witch come and switch out the candy they can’t eat in return for something they can. Kind of like Santa! People a lot of times think I can’t even be next to it but at school I sit next to my friends even if they have PB&J because I would have to eat peanuts to have a reaction. My numbers have gone down but they are still serious.

My allergy is what makes me, me. I am happy even though I am allergic to peanuts because I can still have fun and eat many other foods.
