My name is Renna Keller. I am in fifth grade at Margaretta Elementary. I am 11 years old. I like to play sports such as basketball, softball and volleyball. Something special about me is that when I was born I had a cleft palate. It gives me determination for getting through difficulties that come with a cleft palate.
Having a cleft palate can also have some side effects. I have had many surgeries to close up my palate. They have been unsuccessful leaving me with two small holes in my palate. Due to my small holes, certain foods come out of my nose like ice-cream, chocolate and milk. I can make unique noises through these small holes. A cleft palate typically affects the middle ear. I have to go to the ear doctor and I have had many surgeries. Lastly, I have lost some hearing causing me to talk loudly sometimes. This can be annoying to some people. Though these side-effects seem like they have had a big effect on my life they have not affected my learning, success in school, sports and friendships.
I celebrate my difference by using it as a strength. I am learning to flaunt it by writing this essay. A message I want readers to remember is always use your differences and challenges to build strength. For example, I have a difference that is sometimes a challenge, but I use it as a strength by not letting it affect learning, school, sports and friendships. If you choose to accept your uniqueness as a benefit it will make you confident. As you can see, being unique is very helpful.
